CHA Offers Guidebook for Helping Californians Obtain Health Coverage

CHA has published a guidebook featuring strategies California hospitals can use to help enroll individuals in health coverage programs. Using information gathered from interviewing hospital leaders throughout the state, the guidebook details successful strategies of hospital-based outreach and enrollment. “As California proceeds with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, millions of Californians will be newly eligible for health coverage,” said Anne McLeod, CHA senior vice president for health policy. “Enrolling the uninsured in health coverage programs will be a massive undertaking, and California hospitals will have a major role.”

As many as 70 percent of Californians have indicated they would like assistance signing up for new health coverage options. CHA’s guidebook also includes steps hospitals can take to participate in Covered California’s Enrollment Assistance Program and use the new California Healthcare Eligibility, Enrollment and Retention System (CalHEERS), a portal for screening and enrolling Californians in health coverage programs.

CHA is pleased to offer the guidebook as a membership service. Guidebooks have been mailed to hospital CEOs and CFOs. CHA members may also access an electronic copy and purchase additional copies at
