CHA Joins State Hospital Associations to Urge Delay of Price Transparency Final Rule
For CEOs, CFOs, COOs, government relations staff

CHA — along with 33 additional state hospital associations — sent a letter on July 2 to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Seema Verma, urging the agencies to delay the effective date of the hospital price transparency requirements. Absent a delay, hospitals will be required to comply with the Hospital Price Transparency final rule by Jan. 1, 2021.

Under the final rule, hospitals are required to post gross charges, payer-specific negotiated rates, the de-identified minimum and maximum negotiated rates, and the cash discount price for all items and services on a website in a machine-readable format. In addition, the final rule requires posting of information for 300 “shoppable” services in a consumer-friendly manner. The final rule is currently subject to a legal challenge led by the American Hospital Association. CHA’s letter asks HHS to pause the rule’s implementation until the issue is settled in the courts.
