Certain Provisions of Episode Payment Model Final Rule Delayed
July 1 performance period for cardiac care EPM unchanged

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has issued the attached final rule delaying the effective date of its previous final rule implementing a new mandatory episode-based payment model (EPM) for cardiac care and expanding the current Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) model to include surgical treatments for hip and femur fractures beyond hip replacement. The delay is a result of the Trump Administration’s regulatory freeze and delays until March 21 the effective date for all provisions of the rule originally set for Feb. 18. However, provisions that will take effect July 1 remain effective on that date, including the beginning of the first performance period for the EPMs for cardiac care and a number of the changes to the CJR model. The final rule does not make any other changes to the CJR program or the cardiac EPMs.
