CDPH Requests Follow-Up of Patients With Enterovirus D68 Symptoms

The Center for Infectious Diseases has released additional information on the increased number of Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) cases reported in Kansas City, Missouri and Chicago. In response, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has released the attached notice requesting the following:

  1. Children under age 18 with severe respiratory illness — especially wheezing — should have respiratory specimens collected and submitted for polymerase chain reaction for multiple viral pathogens, including influenza, rhinovirus and/or enterovirus.
  2. Specimens that test positive for rhinovirus or enterovirus should be sent to local public health laboratories. The laboratories should submit all positive specimens to the CDPH Viral and Rickettsial Disease Laboratory with the attached EV-D68 surveillance submittal form.
  3. Vigilance in reporting to CDPH clusters or outbreaks of severe respiratory illness.

For more information, see the attached notice. Questions about laboratory testing can be directed to the CDPH Viral and Rickettsial Disease Laboratory at (510) 307-8585.
