CDPH Notice Addresses New Law on Communicating End-of-Life Options

The California Department of Public Health has issued an All Facilities Letter (AFL), providing notice of the enactment of AB 2139. Effective Jan. 1, 2015, when making a diagnosis of a terminal illness, a health care provider is required to notify the patient of the right to receive comprehensive information and counseling on legal end-of-life options. If the health care provider does not wish to comply with the request for information and counseling, the provider must refer the patient to another provider for provision of that information. For more information, see the attached AFL.
