CDPH Launches HIE Gateway
Web portal helps hospitals meet meaningful use requirements

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has launched the CDPH Health Information Exchange (HIE) Gateway to help hospitals and health care professionals meet the requirements of the Meaningful Use (MU) public health objectives of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) electronic health record incentive program. CDPH intends for its HIE Gateway to serve as a single point of entry for data submission to many state public health programs, although not all programs will begin using the CDPH HIE Gateway immediately.

Beginning this month, CDPH recommends that eligible hospitals and health care professionals who wish to register and submit data to the following CDPH systems use the HIE Gateway, regardless of whether they are seeking to fulfill MU requirements, including:

  1. Immunization reporting to the California Immunization Registries (CAIR):  Seven regions (NorCal, Bay, Greater Sacramento, Central Coast, Central Valley, LA-Orange and Inland Empire) will need to register and submit data through the HIE Gateway. The CAIR Immunization Messaging Portal is now integrated into the HIE Gateway. If a site has already registered at the CAIR Portal and is only interested in immunization reporting, it will not be required to re-register at the HIE Gateway.
  2. Electronic lab report submission to the California Reportable Disease Information Exchange system will need to register and submit data through the CDPH HIE Gateway.

In future phases, CDPH will expand the HIE Gateway for registration of other CDPH electronic reporting systems. To access the Gateway and begin the registration process, visit
