CDPH Issues Health Advisory on Severe Influenza

Following four influenza-associated deaths in adults under age 64 in California, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued the attached health advisory and guidance on severe influenza. In addition to the recent deaths, CDPH reports a number of critically ill influenza patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome in ICUs. The information in the advisory is intended for clinicians caring for influenza patients, particularly those who are severely ill. An example of ongoing CDPH influenza tracking in California, relative to baseline and epidemic levels, is also attached for reference. Updated information on influenza activity, influenza vaccines and other recommendations can be viewed on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention influenza website, while California-specific tracking updates may be found on the CDPH website.
