CDPH Issues Guidance on Use of Influenza Rapid Tests in Hospitals

As influenza season approaches, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued the attached memo reminding providers that rapid influenza diagnostic tests (RIDTs) can be falsely negative when the virus is widespread, and falsely positive when it is less common. Regardless of the results of prior RIDTs, CDPH recommends that providers perform rRT-PCR diagnostic testing and prompt empiric therapy with a neuraminidase inhibitor in hospitalized patients with suspected influenza. Providers are also reminded to report all deaths associated with influenza in people under 65 years of age to local health departments.
