CDPH Issues Guidance on Sedation Policies and Procedures

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued an All Facilities Letter (AFL) to general acute care hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers and surgical clinics outlining state and federal requirements for safe administration of procedural sedation. Intended as an aid to developing appropriate policies and procedures, the guidance addresses conscious sedation and monitored anesthesia care, but not rapid sequence induction for emergency intubation or sedation for ventilated or comatose patients. The AFL information is drawn from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services interpretive guidelines, which specify that policies and procedures for sedation must be based on nationally recognized guidelines. The AFL also addresses specific practitioner provisions. For more detailed information, see the attached AFL.
