CDPH Encourages Routine Use of Naloxone in Certain Circumstances

The California Department of Public Health has issued an All Facility Letter (AFL) encouraging the routine provision of take-home Naloxone to patients prescribed long-term/high-dose opioids and patients known to use opiates non-medically. To combat the rising trend of overdose deaths — now outranking vehicle crashes in annual unintentional injury deaths — naloxone quickly reverses overdose and counteracts the potentially fatal respiratory depression opiates may cause. In March, the California Department of Health Care Services released a bulletin announcing that Naloxone is covered under Medi-Cal and Medicare programs. For more information, see the attached AFL.
