CDPH Asks Hospitals to Report Fentanyl Overdoses to Local Health Departments

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued the attached alert requesting that health care facilities statewide report suspected and confirmed fentanyl overdose cases to their local health departments. The request follows a recent rash of overdoses and deaths — 48 overdoses and 10 deaths in Sacramento County alone — suspected to be a result of consuming an opioid drug that resembles Norco but is actually fentanyl. CDPH has received reports of similar incidents in other counties.

CDPH also requests that health care facilities test for fentanyl when ordering drug screening in cases of suspected overdose and warn patients with a history of substance abuse about the risks of purchasing street drugs.
