Cal/OSHA Issues Guidance on Employee Safety Precautions for Ebola

Cal/OSHA this week released the attached guidance on employee safety precautions for Ebola virus disease (EVD), stating that it is “committed to working closely with CDPH, as well as with employers and employee organizations, to ensure that employees in California are protected against EVD.” The guidance reiterates that both the Cal/OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) and Aerosol Transmissible Disease standards apply. The guidance also includes information about laboratory employers, including California Department of Public Health packaging and shipping guidelines for Ebola specimens.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also indicated it intends to update its guidance with respect to personal protective equipment. That guidance will be distributed as soon as it is available. Additional information and the Cal/OSHA guidance are available at
