Board of Pharmacy Approves Naloxone Hydrochloride Without Prescription

The California State Board of Pharmacy has approved emergency regulations — which became effective April 10 — allowing pharmacists to furnish naloxone hydrochloride without a prescription. Naloxone hydrochloride is now available upon request or at the suggestion of a pharmacist. Prescriptions will be labeled in the purchaser’s name.

AB 1535, enacted in 2014, required the Board of Pharmacy to develop these regulations and required approval by the Medical Board of California.
