April Is National Donate Life Month

CHA this month joins Donate Life California, the state organ, eye and tissue donor registry, to support National Donate Life Month. The month-long celebration honors the generosity of organ, eye and tissue donors and their families and commemorates all transplant recipients in the U.S.

In a Presidential proclamation earlier this month, President Obama said, “At this moment, more than 123,000 Americans are in need of a life-saving organ transplant. Our nation continues to face a critical shortage of donors, and every day, 21 people die waiting for an organ. This month, we renew our call for organ, eye, and tissue donors, and we honor all those who have given the extraordinary gift of life.”

Many California hospitals already have participated in National Donate Life Month by hosting flag-raising ceremonies and other events. To help hospitals generate ideas and spread the word about organ and tissue donation, Donate Life California has created a web page of useful information, tools and tips. In addition, the organization has teamed with CHA to create an online hospital volunteer toolkit to support volunteers interested in creating a culture of organ and tissue donation in their hospitals.
