Anthem Extends Advanced Imaging Policy Effective Date to Jan. 1, 2018

Anthem has again extended the effective date of its advanced imaging policy, which requires a medical necessity review for MRI and CT imaging. Patients not meeting Anthem’s determination of medical necessity will be directed to an alternate free-standing imaging center.

The policy, originally scheduled to take effect Sept. 1, 2017, has been extended to Jan.1, 2018.  The Department of Managed Health Care, responding to concerns raised by CHA and other provider organizations, is reviewing the policy as part of its licensing authority. The regulatory review is not complete, thus prompting Anthem to further delay the effective date of the policy. CHA continues to work with the Department on hospital concerns about the policy’s harmful impact on patient care.
