AHA Report Looks at Health Coverage Trends, Implications for Hospitals

The American Hospital Association released yesterday a TrendWatch report titled, Increasing Consumer Choice in Coverage and Care: Implications for Hospitals. According to the report, employers continue to see rising health insurance costs and are shifting more of the cost to employees, as well as choosing less expensive plans that restrict access to a narrower range of providers. With the addition of the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance marketplaces, millions more Americans now must make similar tradeoffs in coverage decisions, as they choose between upfront premium costs, cost-sharing levels and provider access. “To respond to the demands of this new marketplace, hospitals and health systems will need to proactively promote patient and provider education, become more transparent about price and quality, develop a network strategy and revisit marketing and advocacy efforts,” the report states.
