2012 Mental Health Law Manual Available; Accepting Pre-Orders for EMTALA

CHA’s Mental Health Law manual and EMTALA — A Guide to Patient Anti-Dumping Laws have been updated for 2012 to reflect changes to state and federal legislation, regulations and judicial decisions. CHA presents the various laws in a user-friendly manner to help health care professionals understand the legal requirements, as well as the rights and protections of the patients they serve.

“Mental health law is particularly difficult because there are multiple bodies of law,” stated Lois Richardson, CHA vice president, privacy and legal publications/education. “In the Mental Health Law manual, all laws governing mental health treatment and medical privacy are discussed — the LPS Act, CMIA, HIPAA, the HITECH Act, and other state and federal laws. And, new to EMTALA this year is a chapter covering psychiatric emergency patients. Both manuals are great resources for hospitals.” For more information or to order the manuals, visit
