Medicare reimburses teaching hospitals for the costs of medical education through payments for graduate medical education (GME). These payments are in two forms: cost-based payments intended to reimburse hospitals for direct costs related to medical, dental or podiatric residents treating Medicare patients (DGME); and per-claim enhancements to inpatient or outpatient Medicare reimbursements to offset hospitals’ indirect costs of medical education (IME).
