Provider Designation

Certain Medicare provider designations offer an opportunity for qualifying hospitals to receive enhanced reimbursement from the Medicare program.

Medicare Dependent Hospital

For cost reporting periods beginning on or after April 1, 1990 and ending before October 1, 1994 or for discharges occurring on or after October 1, 1997 and ending before October 1, 2006, a Medicare Dependent Hospital (MDH) is a rural hospital that meets all of the following criteria:

Legislation enacted as part of the Balanced Budget Act (BBA) of 1997 authorized states to establish State Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility Programs (Flex Program), under which certain facilities participating in Medicare can become Critical Access Hospitals (CAH). A Hospital is eligible to be classified as a Sole Community Hospital (SCH) if it is located more than 35 miles from other like hospitals. A hospital may also be classified as a SCH if it is located in a rural area AND it meets ONE of the following three conditions:
