Advises the CHA Board regarding quality of patient care and
patient-safety issues, transparency, public reporting, member
needs, policy development, and legislative and regulatory needs.
The Hospital Quality Committee, comprised of CHA members, advises
the CHA Board of Trustees regarding quality of patient care and
patient safety issues, transparency, public reporting, member
needs, policy development, research methodologies, benchmarking,
and legislative and regulatory needs. The Committee is a
reliable, dynamic source of knowledge and support for the
on-going efforts to improve patient safety and health care
delivery in California.
CHA and the Regional Associations have created a new statewide
organization that will strengthen, support and align patient
safety and quality improvement activities in hospitals throughout
California.
The Hospital Quality Institute (HQI) will incorporate all of the
Associations’ existing patient safety and quality improvement
activities — including the California Hospital Patient Safety
Organization, Patient Safety First, the California
Hospital Engagement Network (known as CALHEN) and other local and
regional collaboratives — into one streamlined organization. HQI
will be responsible for establishing a statewide strategy and
vision for patient safety and quality improvement, providing
clarity and enhancing member value.
HQI will be governed by CHA, the Regional Associations and
hospital representatives. The Institute will be led by CEO
Julianne Morath, RN, MS, a nationally known expert in health care
quality and patient safety. Morath, who currently is the
chief quality and patient safety officer for Vanderbilt
University Medical Center, serves on the board of the National
Patient Safety Foundation and the Board of Commissioners of The
Joint Commission. She will join HQI on March 11.
In mid-August, CDPH released their most recent data on HAI
reporting through an improved website. This website presents the
material in a more user-friendly format and groups the reporting
hospitals into like categories for a more balanced analysis and
comparison. Learn about changes to the website, recent
release and analysis of HAI data, and what it says about the
performance of California hospitals to date.
